Telma Hopkins was born on October 28, 1948. She was born in Louisville, Kentucky but grew up with her grandmother in Highland Park, Michigan. She started out as a singer and started working on some hit songs produced by the legendary Motown Records. She has also sung for such successful bands as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes and The Four Tops.
In 1971 Telma Hopkins was recruited by Tony Orlando alongside Joyce Vincent Wilson to form a music group consisting of “Dawn”. Previously, Orlando had already released 2 singles “Candida” and “Knock Three Times”, under the name Dawn. So he decided to form a real band to go on tour and record more songs. The group enjoyed resounding success and released 16 top 40 singles, including 3 number one hits. The band also had their own television show Tony Orlando and Dawn (1974-1976) on ABC. Despite these successes, they disbanded in 1977.

Being a multi-talented woman, Hopkins soon became interested in acting in the late 1970s. She landed her first regular role on the short-lived sitcom A New Kind of Family (1979-1980). She landed a bigger role as Isabelle Hammond on the sitcom Bosom buddies (1980-1982). She has also been part of the main cast of several other successful sitcoms. as Addy Wilson on Leave Me Alone! (1983-1987), as Rachel Crawford Family Matters (1989-97) and Dolores Dixon on Surrender (1993-1994).
At the turn of the century, Telma Hopkins continued her dominance on the small screen by settling into the main cast. Half Half (2002-06), starring Phyllis Thorne. Her next major television role was on the Ice Cube sitcom Are We Here Yet? (2010-13) in which she played the role of Marilyn Persons.
